St. Dominic School Library

SDS Library 3rd qtr 2012

Preschool has had many successful visits.  We see our preschool students on Monday morning.

We are practicing how to be Kindergarteners to be ready for next school year.  EVERY

parent/family should have a copy of Rosemary Wells book, My Shining Star; raising a child who

is ready to learn
 to assist in school readiness.

In Kindergarten, students are still learning to 1.  Listen to a story without bothering their neighbor

and 2.  Share information.  They are now allowed to choose books to share at home.  Our first

check out went smoothly.  Please help them keep their books safe from spills, pets and younger

family members.  Let them share with you the safest place to keep their library book.

Many 1st graders are choosing books to read to you and I have a list of students from each room

that can read ‘chapter’ or fiction books!  Please help them practice this valuable skill.  2nd graders

have chosen non-fiction books as well as fiction/chapter books in preparation of AR.  Families

should check out bookadventure.com, to practice basic comprehension questions.  Let your

students explain the ‘code’ we put in the back of books to assist in finding their reading levels.   3rd

through 8th grade
continue to practice reading with Accelerated Reader points and goals.  EVERY

student in these grades need to always have a book they can read when their school work is

complete.  We are sharing fantasy in 3rd grade with Toad for Tuesday by Russell Erickson.  We are

sharing realistic fiction 4th grade with Otis Spofford by Beverly Cleary and Cracker Jackson by Betsy

Byars.
